Present Chennai city was known as Madras until 1996, is the capital of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu .Chennai is also one of the oldest metropolitan city of India. It is extremely popular because most of the cultural ,economic and education centres of South India are located in this famous city. Due to various reason it is popular among the international tourists and visitors. Chennai  is called Detroit Of India (or Detroit Of Asia ). Chennai is one of smart city among 1000 Indian Cities . Chennai City is situated on a flat coastal plain  of Bay Of Bengal . Chennai is located at 13.04⁰  N Latitude / 80.17⁰  E longitude on the SouthEast Coast of India.It is also called  Eastern Coastal Plains. The city has elevation of 6 metres (20ft ). And highesr point of peak 60 m(200ft ).The climate of Chennai  is wet and dry. Maximum temperature around 38⁰-42 ⁰ C  ( 100⁰ -108⁰ F) in the summer season and minimum temperature around 18⁰-20 ⁰ C  ( 64⁰ -68⁰ F) in the winter season. The annual rainfall is about  1,400 mm (55 in). The region around Chennai  has served as an important administrative ,military and economic centre for many centuries .During  the 1^st century CE ,a poet and  weaver named Thiruvalluvar lived in the town of Mylapore a neighbourhood of present  Chennai . Portuguese ,Dutch and  English   people  have played a greater and important role to establish , Chennai as metro  City . Chennai Egmore provides access to destinations primarily within Tamil Nadu except a few inter –state trains. The Chennai  suburban railway network provides transportation within the city. Chennai Metro railway service also available in the city of Chennai. Chennai is connected by the Golden Quadrileral System of National Highways . It is connected to other Indian cities by four major National Highways that originate in the city. They are NH4 to Mumbai (via Bangalore and Pune),NH5 to Kolkata (linked via NH6 ) (via Visakhapatnam and Bhubaneswar) NH45 to Theni (via Villupuram ,Tirchirapalli and Dingigul ) and NH205 to Madanapalle (via Tirpuati ).Chennai is connected to other parts  of the state and the union Territory of Puducherry by state highways. The other transport in the city include Vans ,Maxi Cabs , Auto Rickshaws , on –call Metered  Taxis and Tourist Taxis . The city is served by the two major ports ,Chennai Port one of largest artificial port in India and Ennort Port.
