Kolkata called as Calcutta before 2001, after 2000 the city was renamed  as Kolkata . Kolkata is  the capital state of  West Bengal . The area and village occupied today for kolkata were kalikata, Gobindapur and Sutanuti villages. City located on the  east bank of the Hooghly  river and  75  kilometres(47 miles) West of the border  with Bangladesh  . The city lies between 22⁰ 33 ¹45⁰ 47” N  latitude and   88⁰ 21 ¹46⁰ 91” E  longitude. The Kolkata is 1,886.67 km² (728.45 sq miles)metropolitan city  area . The city elevation 1.5-9 m  (5-30 ft ) . The climate condition of Kolkata is tropical wet and dry. Summer (March –June) are hot humid with temperatures  in the low 30⁰ Celsius during dry spells ,maximum  temperatures often exceed  40 ⁰ C (104 ⁰ F) in May and June.Winter lasts for roughly two – and a –half months , with seasonal lows dipping to 9-11⁰ C (48-52 ⁰ F) in December and January . The annual mean temperature is  26 .8 ⁰ C (80.2 ⁰ F).Best season to visit is winter ( Dec to Feb) .Kolkata is  known as

the cultural capital of India . City of joy known as nickname of Kolkata . Kolkata is  centre of modern Indian education , science, culture and politics.
