 Surat  is a city in the western India state of Gujarat .The word Surat means face in Gujarati and Hindi language  .Surat is the second largest city in Gujarat State after Ahmedabad .It is nineth largest urban city in India. Surat is  the administrative capital of the Surat district .The city has been noted for achieving a Guiness world Record  for the largest gathering for a yoga session at one place on International Day of Yoga. Surat used to be a large seaport  of Gujarat state .Now a days Surat is  the commercial and economic hubs of south Gujarat and one of the largest urban area of Western India . Surat is well–established diamond and textile Industry .City is  major supply centre for apparels and accessories. Surat port  situated on the banks of the Tapti river .Surat city lies between 21 012’18” N latitude and 72 50’24” E longitude and at an average elevation of  13 meters above the sea level. The Surat district is surrounded by the Bharuch ,Narmada, Navsari ,Tapi district and  Gult of Cambay to the West. Surat has a tropical Savanna climate .In the summer season April and May are the hottest month. Monsoon late June to end of  September and Late Novermber .Winter season starts in December and ends in late February.Surat average maximum temperature is 320 C (900 F) and  mininmum average temperature is 23 0 C (730 F). City average rainfall is about 1,200 mm(47 in).Surat was built up by wealthy Hindu merchant  named Gopi around the year 1500.At first ,the city had no name and was simply called “ the new place “. Gopi consulted with astrologers ,who suggested the name “ Suraj or Suryapur  or City of the Sun”.Gopi  sent  name to king who was Muslim king turn muslim name as Surat in 1500 .Type of tourism site  available  in Surat  are : Tapti River, Surat Diamond
