Kutch
district of Gujarat state is situated in the western side of India. Bhuj is
headquarter of Kutch. The area of Kutch
is about 45,674 sq km, is the largest district of India. It has 939
villages ,talukas 10 and 6 municipalities. The Kutch district is home to the
Kutchi people. Though now a days it is
considered to be a district under Gujarat state, the people of Kutch speaks the
Kutchi language not Gujarati
language.Kutch is virtually an island. It is surrounded by the Arabian
sea in the west. The Gulf of Kutch in south and southeast.The Rann of Kutch is in northeast and north .The border
of Pakistan lies along with the northern edge of the Rann of Kutch . Kutch
mainland is in west side of the district .Kutch is situated at 23.7337 0N
latitude and 69.8597 0E
longitude with an elevation of 5 meter (16 feet) above the sea level.The climate
of Kutch is subtropical. It is hot summer months and in winter the temperature can drop to or below freezing . The average maximum
temperature is 44 0C and average minimum temperature
is 18 0C. Rainfall is highly
seasonal and dry for most of the year in
Rann of Kutch .The average rainfall in kutch is 38.3mm.The Kutch can be traced back to prehistoric
times. There are several sites related to the Indus valley civilization could
be seen in this region. When Alexander
was in fall power, at that time Kutch was ruled by Menander 1 of the Greco
–Bactrian kingdom.The region was later ruled by the Maurya Empire and Sakas.
Maitraka dynasty also ruled here .Kutch came under the rule of the Chaulukya
dynasty by the tenth century. Later it came under the control of Jadeja dynasty.
The Jadeja brothers was divided Kutch into three different branches in three
Sultante and Mughals. Then many more dynasty ruled over the Kutch before the arrival of British East India company in 1819. After the independence of India in 1947 Kutch came under the rule of Indian Government .On 1 November 1956,Kutch was merged with Bombay state. In the year 1960 Bombay state was divided as Maharashtra and Gujarat state, while Kutch became a part of Gujarat state.
