Madurai is a one of major city in Tamil Nadu
state of India. Madurai has nickname is called Thoonga Nagaram. Thoonga means that the city that never sleeps.It is
also one of the largest metropolis which stand third in Tamil Nadu .Madurai is the cultural capital
of Tamil Nadu . It has been a major settlement for two millennia. It has also
documented history of more than 2500
years .Madurai is located at 9.93 N0 latitude and 78.12 E0
longtitude . Madurai is located at 134 metres above the sea level. Madurai is
situated on the banks of River
Vigai. Madurai lies on the flat and
fertile plain of the river Vaigai ,which flows the northwest –south east direction
through the city, dividing it into two almost equal
halves. Sircumalai and
Nagamalai hill located to the north and west of Madurai .Madurai lies
southeast of the western ghats ,and
surrounding region occupies the
plains of south India and contains
several mountain spurs . Madurai is very
best for agricultural activity.
Madurai has an area of 147.97 square kilometers or
57.13 square miles. Madurai has a tropical savanna climate and its border upon a
hot semi –arid climate. Madurai is hot
dry for eight months of the year .Winter
is between November to February. Moderate climate from August
to October. Madurai’s average maximum temperature is 42 0C and average minimum temperature 26.30C .The average annual rainfall
in Madurai is 85.76 cm. Madurai
has been known from the Mythology time. According the legent that
Madurai is called Kadambavan which means forest .The other legend said that a farmer named Dhananjaya
who was passing through this forest ,saw Indra (The king Of The Gods),wordship
the Lord Shiva under Kudamba Trees. Dhanjaya
was reported their King
Kulasekara Pandya.The king clear the forest and built Shiva Temple . Later it
become Pilgrim City Centre. In ancient time many Kings and Muslim Sultans ruled here. In 1781 , Madurai came
control under East India Company then it become part British Raj
till Post Independence .After
Independence Madurai has become part of
Tamil Nadu State Of India.
