Rajgir
is a historic town at the district
of Nalanda
in Bihar . Rajgir means “
The city of kings “. The name Rajgir means in sanskrit is Royal Mountain.
Rajgir was the capital of the
Pradyota dynasty ,Haryanka dynasty ,the
Brihadratha dynasty and the Mauryan empire. The city is famous for historical
figures because of “The Buddha “, and “The Mahavira”, Gautama
Buddha spent several months meditating at Rajgir while Mahavira spent fourteen years
of his life at Rajgir with spiritual activity .The Rajgir city holds a place for Hindu,
Buddhist and Jain scriptures.The town is importants for Hinduism Jainism and Buddhism. Rajgir town is also
popular and famous for its natural
spring towering and landscape.The city lies between 25.0296 0N
latitude and 85,4216 0E longtitude . Rajgir is situated at an
elevation of 73 meters (240 feet )above the sea level.The modern town is situated close to the
Rajgir hills while the valley is surrounded by seven hills are Chhatha hill ,Vaibhara hill ,Vipula
hill, Saila hill, Sona hill , Ratha hill ,and Udyaya hill. River Panchana flows
through the outskirts of the town. Rajgir is influence by subtropical climate with hot summer ,mild winters and a
monsoon season. The city is dry,warm in summer which exist from March to
October. Rajgir ‘s maximum temperature is 440C(111.2 0F ) and minimum temperature 6 0C(42 .4 0F ).The average rainfall of the
city is 1,860(mm).The rainfall take places between mid –June to Mid –September
.Rajgir exist from Mahabharata time.
Rajgir was the capital of Haryanka dynasty.It was the ancient capital city of
the Magadha kings .Shishanaga founded Shishunaga dynasty and Rajgir use to be considered as their capital before it was moved to
Pataliputra. Ajastastru ‘s son move capital from Rajgir to Pataliputra . Rajgir
is associated with the founders of both the religions Jainism and Buddhism .
The Chinese Buddhist pilgrims particularly Faxian and Xuanzang visited here .According to Xuanzang that the
site is divided into old Rajgir and New
Rajgir .The modern town is look
different from Old Rajgir.
